Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are the software layer between you and a human recruiter. Roughly 75% of resumes never reach a human eye. Here's how to get past them without turning your resume into a keyword-stuffed mess.

1. Match the job description language exactly

If the JD says "Kubernetes", don't write "K8s". ATS look for literal string matches. Use the tool's exact language.

2. One column beats two

Some old-school ATS still choke on multi-column layouts. If you're applying to enterprise / government roles, stick to the single-column layouts (templates #1-4 on ClaudeCV).

3. Skip the graphics for header/contact info

Icons look pretty but many parsers strip them. Keep your email/phone as plain text.

4. Use standard section headings

5. Save as PDF (usually)

Modern ATS handle PDF just fine. The old advice to use .docx is outdated for 2026. Only convert to .docx if the application form explicitly demands it.

6. Quantify everything

"Managed a team" is invisible. "Managed a 6-engineer team, shipped 14 features, reduced p95 latency by 42%" is impossible to ignore — by bots and humans.

7. Kill the resume objective

Nobody cares about your objective. Replace it with a 3-line professional summary that leads with your strongest number.

8. Skills section should be a comma-separated list

ATS parses commas. Bullets & pipes sometimes break parsing. Play it safe: "PHP, MySQL, Laravel, React, AWS, Docker".

9. File name matters

Recruiters see the filename. Firstname_Lastname_Role.pdf beats resume_final_v3.pdf.

10. Don't over-index on ATS. Humans still hire.

Getting past the ATS is table stakes. The recruiter and hiring manager still need to want to talk to you. Optimize for both.

11. Test your resume

Paste your resume into a plain text editor. If the reading order looks chaotic — headers scattered, dates before roles — an ATS will see the same chaos. Fix it.
